LENS MATERIALS

CR-39 (Plastic Lens)
The most commonly used lens material that complies with the necessary ASA requirements are known as a CR-39 or Plastic lenses. These lenses are safer than glass lenses and because they're also lighter, offer greater wearer comfort.

ACTIVE (Poly-Carbonate)
Active lenses are thinner, flatter and lighter than CR-39 and 10 times more impact resistant. Active lenses are more scratch resistant than CR-39 and include UV protection. Active lenses more than comply with the necessary ASA standards.

HIGH INDEX
This material is the thinnest of all lens materials and is often used for the correction of moderate to severe visual impairments. Consideration should be given to the cosmetic benefit of using this lens material for safety eyewear as the impact resistant guidelines on lens thickness may require a level of thickness greater than could be achieved using this material for non-safety glasses.

LENS COATINGS

All lenses supplied by Luxottica Retail Vision Services are coated with a hard scratch resistant coating as standard.

LENS DESIGNS

SINGLE VISION
Lenses have one focal length or "power" and are used to correct distance or near vision. If the wearer requires spectacles for distance vision and near vision another lens design may be more suitable.

BIFOCAL
Lenses have two focal lengths and are used to correct distance vision and near vision. This achieved by the eye looking through different segments of the lens. The reading segment is used when the person looks down and inwards to read. Bifocals are available in many designs, however the most common is the Flat Top design. The bifocal has largely been replaced with the Progressive lens design but still has its place. Some wearers find bifocal's the simplest multi-focal lens to be become accustomed to.

PROGRESSIVE
Lenses are designed to correct all distances by a progression of power from the middle of the lens to the lower edge. This lens design offers the wearer a complete eyewear solution for general optical requirements from long distance to middle distance (arm's length) to close up for reading, etc.

ENHANCE (ACCESS LENS)
This lens is designed for computer users allowing uninterrupted vision from approx 35cm to 3 meters through a progression of the power from the top to bottom of the lens. Work stations my need to be modified to accommodate wearers of this lens ‚ the screen may need to be raised or lowered depending on the wearers preferred working angles. This lens may also be useful for workshop (machine operators) use. This lens is not suitable for driving or long distance vision.

LENS TREATMENTS

TRANSITION
A variable tint lens that varies according to changing light conditions and has UV protection built-in. They are most commonly supplied in CR-39 material.

POLARISED
A 75% density tint in a neutral grey/green colour. It is particularly good for use outdoors where reflected light is a problem - bright surroundings or water based activities. The material is a CR-39 laminate and includes a built in UV protective filter and comes with hard coatings.

UV PROTECTIVE FILTER
This is a filter that should be applied to all CR-39 lens materials except Transition where it is built into the material. The UV filter is a colourless additive that increases the UV protection of the lens to 100%, as required by Australian and New Zealand optical regulations.

STANDARD TINTING
Tinting a lens reduces glare. Tints are available in various colours and densities. The most common is G-15 - a true natural grey colour providing the wearer with 75% - 80% glare reduction. It is recommended that tinting be applied to all lenses where the glasses are intended for outdoor use.

ANTI REFLECTIVE COATING
As the name suggests this coating minimise the effects of reflections. It is recommended for all users of VDU appliances and wearers in an office environment. It also offers benefits to professional drivers at night. It is not recommended for use in environments where there is high level of airborne particles such as dust or paint.

ASSEMBLY

All lenses dispensed by Luxottica Retail Vision Services conform to the current ASA 1336 standards covering prescription safety eyewear for industrial application within the workplace.
The explanations above are a guide only. As each optical prescription is specific to the wearer, individual requirements can only be determined after consultation with our optometrists or optical dispensers.
